Unable to find the snowglobe you want? Unwilling to pay for a mass-produced item? Why not build your own snowglobe? You'll have a unique item for your collection or, as the holiday season approaches, an inexpensive gift for a friend or family member.
Clear glass jars work or you can buy a globe designed for this purpose.
Some sort of character or scene to place inside your globe - make sure it's something that won't rust! If you don't have something at home, try a local toy or craft store.
Glitter or snow, available from a craft store.
Distilled water to fill your globe.
A strong, waterproof glue.
Glycerin to help make your "snow" fall more slowly. You should be able to get this at your local drugstore.
Another other items you want to decorate your globe, e.g., spray paint for the lid if you're using a jar.
We've listed sites that provide instruction on how to build a snowglobe or you can follow the video clip below. Most of these are very similar in approach and, with the simple instructions, are perfect for young children - although we do recommend parents help if any cutting or gluing is needed! You can get the supplies you need from most good craft shops if you don't have the listed items lying around at home. Alternatively, you can buy ready-to-assemble kits and parts from the on-line retailers listed here.
